The Beat Beneath My Feet

Cecile van Dijk provided costume design for The Beat Beneath My Feet (2016), a British comedy-drama directed by John Williams. The film tells the story of Tom (Nicholas Galitzine), a teenage loner who discovers that his unruly neighbour Steve (Luke Perry) is in fact a disgraced rock god who faked his own death eight years earlier to escape a fortune in unpaid taxes.

When Tom agrees to keep Steve’s secret, an unlikely friendship blossoms, with the ageing rocker agreeing to teach the boy how to become a rock legend himself. The film also stars Lisa Dillon, and blends humour, nostalgia and heart in its exploration of music, identity and mentorship across generations. More details about the cast and crew can be found on IMDb.

For this project, Cecile van Dijk crafted costumes that reflect both the faded glamour of 1980s rock stardom and the more understated, everyday style of contemporary British suburban life — capturing the contrast between Steve’s former life as a flamboyant performer and his current, low-key existence in hiding.

This ability to bring authenticity to character transformation and contrasting worlds echoes Cecile van Dijk’s work on other character-driven projects, such as The Man in the Hat, further showcasing her versatility across genres and storytelling styles.
